This is my second piece in the intended series of legendary creatures with the ruins from their ancient culture. Quetzalcoatl was a feathered serpent diety from many ancient American cultures. This is the painting that came from the first week of the online workshop with Don Seegmiller on monster painting. Needless to say, I have been enjoying that immensely. The first week was about monster eyes so I came up with this crazyness for my monster that focused on eyes. This is an ice elemental/ goddess stopping a fire elemental/god from destroying the protagonist in my story. I painted it in Painter, all drawn from scratch. I did get references for the Lion's pose and the ice elemental's pose from Poser. Close inspection of the text actually indicates that Sam had both Sting and his sword slashing with one and then the next. The implication is that he actually used both against Shelob. This is Snowmane's last moment according to the book. I love how it was done in the movies, but I like to illustrate the books to keep my own vision of the stories intact. Snowmane senses the wraith and rears up in fear just before the wraith shoots him with an arrow. This was done loosely based off the Silmarillion when Dwarves with specialized masks and armor drive off Glaurung during a battle.
